International Press Corps (IPC)
About the committee:
Founded in 1948, The United Nations Correspondents Association, or UNCA, is a collective of reporters that work tirelessly to accurately display the events that take place among United Nations members and committees. The UNCA, which is currently run by over 200 members from dozens of countries, is an essential part of international politics in the modern world. It provides a direct link between the United Nations and the public while critical decisions about the future are being made.
As a member of the International Press Corps, you will be asked to report on the events of MUNUM XXXIX in the same manner as the UNCA reports on the United Nations. It is your responsibility to uphold the values of integrity and objectivity as you write about conference proceedings. You will be expected to observe debates, interview delegates, and accurately relay information to the public in an objective and neutral manner. In doing so, you will produce pieces of writing that will not only have the potential to be displayed on MUNUM’s daily conference publication, The Working Paper but will also extend far beyond MUNUM’s walls on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and MUNUM’s website.
A letter from the dais:
Hey delegates! My name is Amany Sayed, and I’m so excited to be the director of the International Press Corps for MUNUM XXXIX. I am a second year student at the University of Michigan double majoring in Philosophy and Creative Writing on a pre-law track. This is my second year of MUNUM staff and though I was never involved with Model UN in high school, I’ve learned a lot through the experience of planning the conference. Additionally, I’m part of the Michigan Daily and have a lot of writing experience, which is why I’m in IPC in particular.
As a committee, you will begin reporting on the conference the second it starts, capturing key moments from your fellow committees, describing debated issues in detail, and presenting your excellent writing skills to the entire conference population. Although our International Press Corps committee does not function in the same way as other conferences, the format of the conference will still provide all of our delegates with fun, educational experiences nonetheless.
Instead of representing an individual news organization, all IPC delegates will be working as a board of editors for The Working Paper, MUNUM’s editorial paper covering all conference happenings. You will also be working with video editing, putting together MUNUM XXXIX’s closing ceremonies video, which will not only be a fantastic opportunity to learn about video software, but also provide a fun experience and help you bond with your fellow delegates. Finally, new this year will be the IPC instagram account @theworkinginsta, where you will post in real time about conference occurrences and behind the scenes IPC content.
If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email at amanysay@umich.edu. I’m looking forward to meeting you all and having a great time during the conference!
Best,
Amany Sayed
