The Pouring Twenties: Prohibition in Detroit

About the Committee:

The Summer of 1918 is an exciting time in the city of Detroit. The Jazz and Ragtime scene is exploding along with Detroit’s industrial capabilities, and cultures from across the world are meeting in the newly dubbed “Motor City.” The city is preparing to meet its new mayor, but the gangs of Detroit are also seeing a change in power as the younger generation takes over. Social progress moves towards prohibition, and Michigan already has laws on the books outlawing the sale and manufacturing of alcohol, but a national movement grows. With this, the lucrative trade with Canada becomes even more profitable for those bold enough to import certain items off the books. A group of the city's most influential inhabitants meets; they have the power to bring the city into prosperity, but some wish only to enrich themselves. Factions are sure to form, alongside fragile alliances, the resources of the city fought over and used to their fullest extent, as Detroit -and the world- enter into the age of prohibition.

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:

Delegates,

My name is Joe Kilmurray, and I’m so excited to be one of your co-directors for The Pouring Twenties: Prohibition in Detroit! I’m a Sophomore here at U of M, majoring in linguistics and minoring in writing at the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. I plan on going to law school after my four years at UMich. As well as MUNUM, I’m an active member of TedX at U of M and work in our chemistry department. I loved Model UN in high school and had a fantastic IB Global teacher that instilled in me a love for committee! I love reading, particularly Sci-Fi, as well as Formula One. This will be my second year in MUNUM, and if you come to the University of Michigan, I highly recommend joining as soon as you can! I’ll primarily be in the backroom, so you might not see as much of me, but I’ll do my best to make our drops memorable! I hope all of you love Detroit as much as I do, and if not, I’m sure you will by the end of the committee. Feel free to reach out to me for any reason at all, I’m so excited to meet you!

Hi everyone, my name is Sarah-Catherine Jackson!! I am beyond thrilled to be one of your co-directors for The Pouring Twenties: Prohibition in Detroit! I am a sophomore studying political science in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and I hope to minor in either business or public policy while being on the pre-law track! Outside of MUNUM, I am an active member of my sorority and a leader in a women's ministries group. This is my second year as a part of MUNUM, and I did Model UN all 4 years of high school. However, I prefer being behind the dias, and you will be seeing me as the chair for the majority of the conference. Joe and I have put all of our work into making our committee and MUNUM the best experience possible! Please feel free to reach out, and I can’t wait to meet everyone!

We can’t wait to work with all of you, criminals and lawmen alike! We can be reached at jkilmurr@umich.edu and scathe@umich.edu.

Best,

Joe and Sarah-Catherine, Your Prohibition in Detroit Co-directors
