Under Allied Eyes: Rebuilding Paraguay Following The War of the Triple Alliance (1870)

About the Committee:

On a cold winter day in 1870, the guns were finally put to rest. The country is silent as it mourns the loss of a nation. With a shattered economy and declining population after the most devastating conflict in South American history, the survivors are left to rebuild a broken nation without a leader. As competing visions for the future emerge between liberal reformers and secret nationalists amidst Allied occupation and foreign debt, one question remains: will Paraguay rise as a sovereign nation or be dominated by its neighbors? As the remaining Paraguayans navigate this conundrum, they must be careful. The whole world is watching every move.

I am so excited to welcome you to Under Allied Eyes! My name is Pelzom Sherpa, and I will be serving as one of the co-directors for this committee. I am a sophomore studying Political Science and Business on a pre-law track. Outside of MUNUM, I serve in several leadership roles for various student organizations and work in Human Resources at DTE Energy. In my free time, I love to travel, build Legos, and listen to music. I am eager to bring my passion for crisis committees, debate, and creative problem-solving to a non-traditional setting. This committee will reward strong strategy, collaboration, and creative solutions to combat political deception and unstable economies. I hope everyone is as excited for MUNUM XL as we are. My name is Lily Eggleston, and I am looking forward to serving as one of your co-directors for Under Allied Eyes! I am a current sophomore studying economics (hoping to switch my major to PPE) on the pre-health path. Outside of MUNUM, I stay involved through organizations like the Prison Birth Project, The Michigan Daily, and club tennis. I also really enjoy working and take pride in having a wide variety of experiences (like Barbie!). Currently, I work as a research assistant in a sleep laboratory, intern for a legal nonprofit, and assist a former UMich professor with research on simulated learning methods, among other jobs. My independent interest in South American economic systems is what first drew me to economics as a major, so I am especially excited to direct this committee for all of you this January.
