Jonathan Wild

About the Committee:

In the year 1724, the London slums reach their peak as the wealthy thrive off the poor and crime runs rampant through the streets. At the center of the crime is the rampant vigilante, Jonathan Wild, “thief-taker general,” dominating the streets of London as one of the first documented English mob bosses. He uses fraud and extortion to police the thieves of London, conduct organized crime, and engage in his own acts of robbery, mugging, and pickpocketing his victims. The residents of London, from the English aristocrats to hard-working townsmen, have congregated into a council in search of reform, demanding better living conditions and an end to the lawlessness plaguing their streets. This council must compromise to resolve the unruliness tainting the streets and also address the root cause of these events: economic disorder. Ultimately, it is up to the townspeople of the city council to bring back social order and rid the city of the rampant crimes.

TOPIC A: The rise of organized crime

TOPIC B:  Addressing the economic instability

A LETTER FROM THE DaiS:

Hello Delegates,

My name is Nadia Abdelhady, and I will be serving as one of your co-directors for the Jonathan Wild: Crime, Poverty, and the Struggle for Order in London committee. I am a junior studying Neuroscience on the pre-med track, and I’m from Commerce, Michigan. I participated in MUN throughout all 4 years in high school. This will be my third year staffing MUNUM. Last year, I served as co-director for the Hawaiian Kingdom (the best crisis committee), and for my freshman year, I served as rapporteur for Ad Hoc. Overall, I’m a big crisis committee enthusiast, and so I’m excited to work alongside MUNUM staff to bring you this novel crisis-like committee with special mechanics, and I’m certain this committee will be memorable. Aside from MUNUM, I serve as the social chair for End the Cycle, an organization made to support children from underserved communities, as well as work as a research assistant for WHIRLab (well-being, health, and interpersonal relationships) and ECLS (extracorporeal life support). I’m also passionate about drawing, painting, and cats. Whether you have a question about the committee or in general, feel free to reach out to me! Looking forward to meeting you all :)

Hello! My name is Sohan Amin, and I am delighted to be your other co-director for the Jonathan Wild Committee! I am a junior from Canton, Michigan, studying Biochemistry on the pre-med track. I have been staffing MUNUM for 2 years, spending my first year as a rapporteur in the amazing Hawaiian Kingdom Crisis Committee, and this year being my first year as a director. I have also done Model UN, and attended MUNUM, specifically all 4 years of high school. Outside of MUNUM, I work as a patient care assistant, volunteer at the Humane Society at Huron Valley, and am a member of a student-led dance society. I also love collecting old technology like little radios or barely-working receipt printers, watching copious amounts of video essays, and hiking. Model UN for me has always been a fun opportunity to collaborate, debate, and explore my passions for learning about history and the world around me, and I hope that this committee can do the same for you. I am so excited to see how you use the special mechanics and work with each other to solve the issues at hand!

Best,

The Staff of The Jonathan Wild Committee
